A Comedian's Fake ICE Tip Line Exposed Spiteful Neighbors. It Also Put Him On A DHS Watchlist.
Why Was the Alert Issued? The federal alert was triggered by Palmer's viral parody project. Operating under his online persona @palmertrolls, Palmer launched a fake immigration tip line designed to look like an official U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reporting system.
The DHS issued the intelligence alert because it flagged the prank as a "fraudulent YouTube page" and a deceptive website. However, Palmer does not claim any actual affiliation with the government during his recordings. State-level agencies, including the Illinois statewide intelligence network, subsequently distributed the bulletin to local police departments.
What Happens on the Fake Tip Line?Palmer created the project to expose societal biases and document how easily anonymous reporting can be weaponised. He has recorded and published hundreds of real calls from individuals attempting to report immigrants for petty or absurd reasons:
School Reports: A viral call featured a kindergarten teacher attempting to deport the parents of one of her 6-year-old students.Petty Grievances: Callers reporting neighbours for "side-eyeing" or giving them dirty looks.Financial Envy: A caller demanding an investigation into an immigrant driving a brand-new Corvette because it was too nice.Personal Vendettas: Spouses attempting to have their ex-partners deported over personal arguments.
Palmer stated that he was entirely unaware he had been placed on a federal law enforcement watchlist until investigative journalists from Injustice Watch informed him of the active BOLO bulletin.
